This Edwardian terrace house is located on the Bedford Estate, one of London’s garden city suburbs. An elegant double-fronted facade to the tree-lined street was not reflected at the rear, where a brick-built utility room and cloakroom cut off the connection to the garden. The solution was to restructure the rear of the property, replacing the original brick with a combination of structural glass and white rendered elements, setting up a series of frames to create new vistas through the house. The new addition creates a second route from the kitchen/breakfast room to the sitting room, with a long vista through the living room across the new pond. The new additions were arranged as a series of portal frames braced by structural glass beams that also support the structural glass roof of the new rear addition. Motorised glass doors slide into pockets in the free-standing walls, opening up the internal space to the walled garden and pond.
